Understanding AuDHD and Complex PTSD Through the Bandwidth Model™ Three Metaphors. One Nervous System.

One of the challenges in understanding neurodevelopmental conditions and trauma is that they are often discussed as though they exist in separate categories. Autism is described as a difference in social communication and sensory processing. ADHD is framed as a disorder of attention and executive functioning. Complex PTSD is understood through the lens of trauma, attachment, and survival.

In real life, however, these conditions frequently interact.

The Bandwidth Model™ proposes that behavior is not determined solely by diagnosis, but by the interaction between processing architecture, nervous system state, cumulative load, and available cognitive bandwidth. Rather than asking “What diagnosis explains this?” the model asks “How are these systems interacting right now?”

Three familiar metaphors help illustrate what that interaction can feel like from the inside.

🎬 Groundhog Day: When Yesterday Becomes Today’s Prediction

In the film Groundhog Day, Bill Murray’s character wakes up every morning to Sonny & Cher’s “I’ve Got You Babe.” No matter what he does, he finds himself reliving the same day.

Although exaggerated for storytelling, this provides a useful metaphor for trauma.

Trauma is not simply remembering painful experiences. Modern cognitive models suggest that previous experiences influence how the brain predicts future events. When present-day cues resemble earlier danger—even subtly—the brain may prepare for threat before conscious reasoning has fully evaluated the situation (Ehlers & Clark, 2000).

From the outside, someone may appear to be “overreacting.”

From the inside, the nervous system is attempting to prevent another injury using information that previously promoted survival.

Different situation.

Different people.

Different year.

Yet the same internal alarm clock begins playing the same song.

The nervous system isn’t trying to replay the past.

It’s trying to avoid repeating it.

Inside Out 2

: When Threat Takes the Controls

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 provides another useful metaphor.

During the panic attack sequence, Anxiety gradually takes over the control panel.

While this is obviously fictional, it closely resembles what many people describe during periods of overwhelming uncertainty.

Threat-processing systems become increasingly influential.

Attention narrows.

Prediction accelerates.

The brain rapidly searches for possible danger.

Flexible thinking becomes more difficult.

Executive resources become increasingly devoted to answering one question:

“How do I stay safe?”

Research demonstrates that acute and chronic stress reduce prefrontal cortex functioning while increasing reliance on faster survival-oriented neural systems (Arnsten, 2009; Arnsten, 2015).

This does not mean people become irrational.

It means the brain reallocates limited cognitive resources toward protection.

🚘 Passenger Mode: Riding in a Self-Driving Car

Now imagine sitting inside a self-driving vehicle.

You’re awake.

You know where you would like to go.

You understand the situation.

Yet the vehicle is already moving.

You cannot immediately change its direction.

Many individuals with ADHD, autism, trauma histories, or burnout describe something similar.

They know what they want to do.

They understand the logical solution.

Yet accessing executive functioning feels remarkably difficult.

This isn’t a loss of intelligence.

Nor is it a lack of motivation.

Rather, reflective systems may simply have reduced access while the nervous system prioritizes faster protective responses.

The experience often feels like being the passenger rather than the driver.

Putting the Three Together

Now imagine these three scenes occurring simultaneously.

You wake up once again to Sonny & Cher’s “I’ve Got You Babe.”

Threat has taken over the control panel.

You’re sitting in the passenger seat while the vehicle follows yesterday’s map.

From the outside, someone may observe:

  • Overthinking

  • Rumination

  • Emotional intensity

  • Difficulty letting something go

  • Executive dysfunction

  • Hypervigilance

From the inside, however, these experiences often represent a nervous system attempting to maximize safety while operating under significant cognitive load.

The Bandwidth Model™ Perspective

The Bandwidth Model™ proposes that these experiences emerge through the interaction of four primary variables:

Processing Architecture

Each person’s brain processes information differently.

Autistic individuals often rely more heavily on explicit reasoning, conscious pattern recognition, and analytical processing, particularly in socially ambiguous situations (Livingston et al., 2019; Milton, 2012).

This is not inherently deficient.

It is simply a different processing architecture.

Nervous System State

The nervous system continuously evaluates cues of safety and danger.

States of regulation influence what cognitive resources are available.

When people feel safe, executive functioning becomes more accessible.

When survival systems dominate, cognitive flexibility often decreases.

Cumulative Load

Life continually adds load.

Examples include:

  • Sensory overload

  • Burnout

  • Chronic stress

  • Grief

  • Poor sleep

  • Illness

  • Hormonal changes

  • Trauma activation

  • Decision fatigue

  • Social masking

Each additional demand consumes cognitive resources.

Available Cognitive Bandwidth

Bandwidth represents the cognitive resources available for higher-order functioning.

As cumulative load increases, available bandwidth decreases.

Research consistently demonstrates that stress reduces access to executive functioning, working memory, inhibitory control, planning, attentional regulation, and cognitive flexibility (Arnsten, 2009; Liston et al., 2009; McEwen & Wingfield, 2003).

When bandwidth narrows, the brain increasingly prioritizes immediate survival over reflective problem-solving.

Why AuDHD and Complex PTSD Can Amplify One Another

The Bandwidth Model™ proposes that these systems may interact in complementary ways under high load.

Autism influences how information is processed.

ADHD influences how attention and executive regulation are managed.

Complex PTSD influences how the environment is interpreted for potential threat.

When cumulative load remains manageable, these systems may coexist with relatively little disruption.

As bandwidth narrows, however, the interaction between them can become increasingly noticeable.

The nervous system devotes more resources toward prediction and protection while fewer remain available for flexible reasoning, emotional regulation, and cognitive control.

Rather than viewing behaviors as isolated symptoms, the Bandwidth Model™ encourages clinicians to understand them as dynamic interactions occurring within the context of available cognitive bandwidth.

Implications for Treatment

If reduced bandwidth contributes to diminished executive access, then treatment should extend beyond symptom reduction.

It should also focus on restoring available bandwidth.

This may include:

  • Reducing cumulative stressors

  • Supporting sleep and recovery

  • Addressing trauma responses

  • Accommodating sensory needs

  • Improving environmental fit

  • Increasing opportunities for nervous system regulation

  • Building executive supports rather than assuming motivation is lacking

The goal is not to eliminate autism, ADHD, anxiety, or trauma responses.

The goal is to create conditions in which higher-order cognitive systems have greater opportunity to function.

A Different Question

Traditional models often ask:

“What’s wrong with this person?”

The Bandwidth Model™ invites a different question:

“How much cognitive bandwidth does this person’s nervous system have available right now?”

Sometimes understanding behavior begins not by identifying what is broken, but by recognizing how much load the nervous system is carrying.

While the model is grounded in peer-reviewed research, the Bandwidth Model™ itself is a conceptual synthesis and has not yet been empirically validated as an independent theoretical model. The metaphors presented (e.g., Groundhog Day, Inside Out 2, and the self-driving Waymo) are intended to illustrate subjective lived experience rather than serve as literal descriptions of neurobiological processes.
