Trauma Matters. But It Isn’t the Whole Story.
For much of my career, I asked the same questions many clinicians ask:
What happened to this person?
How has trauma shaped their life?
Those are important questions, and trauma-informed care has fundamentally improved how we understand human behavior.
But over time, I noticed something that trauma alone couldn’t fully explain.
Two people could experience remarkably similar traumatic events and function very differently.
One might become hypervigilant and constantly scan for danger. Another might withdraw emotionally. One might seek reassurance and closeness, while another distances themselves from the people they love most. One might continue working successfully despite significant internal distress, while another struggles to complete everyday tasks.
Even more puzzling, the same person could function very differently from one day to the next.
Their intelligence hadn’t changed.
Their values hadn’t changed.
Their motivation hadn’t disappeared.
So what had changed?
That question became one of the driving forces behind the development of the Bandwidth Model™.
Trauma Changes the Nervous System
Trauma absolutely matters.
Research consistently demonstrates that traumatic experiences can alter stress physiology, increase allostatic load, recalibrate threat detection, and influence how the nervous system responds under stress (McEwen & Wingfield, 2003; van der Kolk, 2014).
From one influential neurophysiological framework, Polyvagal Theory proposes that when the nervous system perceives danger, support for social engagement decreases while defensive autonomic responses become more likely (Porges, 2011).
Those responses are adaptive.
Fight.
Flight.
Freezing.
Immobilization.
These are not signs that the nervous system is failing.
They are signs that it is attempting to protect us.
The difficulty arises when a nervous system that has repeatedly learned to anticipate danger begins recruiting these protective responses in situations that are objectively safer than those that originally required them.
Bandwidth Is About Access, Not Just Ability
One of the central ideas within the Bandwidth Model™ is that trauma often doesn’t eliminate ability.
Instead, it changes access.
From a bandwidth perspective, trauma frequently increases the cost of accessing capacities that are still present.
A person may still possess empathy.
They may still possess insight.
They may still possess emotional regulation skills.
They may still possess communication skills.
But accessing those capacities may require considerably more physiological, cognitive, and emotional effort than it once did.
This distinction matters.
When bandwidth narrows, the nervous system doesn’t necessarily lose abilities.
It reallocates resources.
Resources that might otherwise support reflection, flexibility, communication, or emotional availability may instead be directed toward monitoring for danger, managing distress, or maintaining physiological stability.
The person hasn’t become less capable.
Their available bandwidth has changed.
Why Relationships Change
This perspective also helps explain something that has fascinated me throughout my clinical work:
Trauma doesn’t only influence individuals.
It influences relationships.
As defensive states become more prominent, fewer resources may be available for executive functioning, cognitive flexibility, perspective-taking, emotional regulation, communication, and reciprocal social engagement (Arnsten, 2009; Miller & Cohen, 2001).
That doesn’t mean people stop caring.
It means connection becomes more difficult to access.
These physiological shifts can also influence how attachment is expressed.
A person who is generally secure may seek greater reassurance during periods of high physiological load.
Someone else may become quieter and emotionally distant.
Another may oscillate between pursuing closeness and creating distance as their nervous system shifts between different defensive states.
Trauma is associated with disruptions in attachment security, but outcomes vary considerably depending on neurodevelopment, developmental history, resilience, cumulative load, relationships, and environmental context (Bowlby, 1969/1982; Mikulincer & Shaver, 2016).
Attachment, in other words, is not the whole story.
The Same Trauma Doesn’t Produce the Same Outcome
One reason I began moving toward a bandwidth perspective is because trauma is remarkably variable.
Two people can experience the same traumatic event and respond very differently.
Why?
Because trauma interacts with many other factors.
Neurodevelopmental architecture.
Current physiological state.
Cumulative stress.
Environmental demands.
Recovery opportunities.
Relational supports.
These factors all influence how much capacity is actually accessible at any given moment.
From this perspective, variability isn’t inconsistency.
It’s often a predictable consequence of changing biological, psychological, relational, and environmental conditions.
Relational Mismatch
The bandwidth perspective also changes how we think about conflict.
Sometimes relationship difficulties aren’t simply personality differences.
They aren’t always incompatible attachment styles.
Sometimes they reflect two nervous systems attempting to connect while operating under very different constraints.
One person may have enough available bandwidth to remain curious, emotionally available, flexible, and engaged in repair.
The other may be allocating much of their available capacity toward detecting, managing, or recovering from perceived threat.
One partner seeks conversation.
The other needs silence.
One experiences withdrawal as rejection.
The other experiences withdrawal as the only available strategy to prevent overwhelm.
Neither nervous system exists in isolation.
Each influences the other.
When one person’s defensive responses increase another person’s sense of threat, both nervous systems may narrow their available bandwidth, making effective communication increasingly difficult.
Understanding Isn’t Excusing
Viewing behavior through a bandwidth lens doesn’t eliminate personal responsibility.
It helps us better understand why people think, feel, behave, and relate the way they do under different conditions.
Understanding mechanisms allows us to choose interventions that better match the challenges people are actually experiencing.
Sometimes what appears to be avoidance reflects protection.
Sometimes what appears to be inconsistency reflects fluctuating access to capacity.
Sometimes what appears to be emotional distance reflects a nervous system operating under significant bandwidth constraints.
Looking Beyond Trauma Alone
Trauma remains one of the most important influences on human functioning.
But it isn’t the only one.
The Bandwidth Model™ proposes that day-to-day functioning emerges from the interaction of multiple forces—including neurodevelopment, physiological state, cumulative load, environmental context, and patterns of regulation—not trauma alone.
By shifting our attention from “What’s wrong with this person?” to “What is shaping this person’s bandwidth right now?”, we move away from assumptions about character and toward a more nuanced understanding of human functioning.
Because sometimes what changes isn’t how much we care.
Sometimes what changes is how much of ourselves we can access.
