How the Bandwidth Model Came About
People often ask where the Bandwidth Model came from.
The honest answer?
It wasn’t born from a single theory.
It started with a question.
For more than 25 years working in community mental health, I kept noticing the same pattern: clients with the same diagnosis could function very differently depending on stress, sleep, trauma activation, and environmental demands. Some interventions worked remarkably well one day and seemed almost ineffective the next.
I didn’t yet understand why.
Then, a couple of years ago, I hit a wall.
Looking back, I recognize many features that I now associate with neurodivergent burnout, but I didn’t have that language at the time. I only knew that the coping skills I had relied on—and taught for years—were no longer working the way they once had.
My question wasn’t about nervous systems.
It was simply:
“Why isn’t this working?”
That question led me to begin reverse-engineering my own experience. I started looking for patterns in what increased or reduced my ability to think clearly, regulate emotions, shift attention, and function from one day to the next.
Around that same time, I happened to come across a few social media reels introducing polyvagal-informed concepts. They immediately captured my attention and quickly became a special interest. I dove into the literature—not because I was looking for a new therapeutic model, but because I was trying to understand what had happened to me.
As I continued learning, I found pieces of the puzzle across multiple disciplines. Polyvagal-informed concepts, Daniel Siegel’s work on interpersonal neurobiology, Bruce McEwen’s work on allostasis and cumulative load, Bessel van der Kolk’s work on trauma, Lisa Feldman Barrett’s work on the predictive brain, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, decades of clinical observation, and my own lived experience all contributed important pieces.
But the questions came before the theory.
Gradually, the pieces started fitting together.
What began as an attempt to understand my own experience became an effort to describe broader principles of how nervous systems gain—and sometimes lose—access to their available resources.
That process eventually evolved into what is now the Bandwidth Model.
It isn’t an attempt to explain one diagnosis.
It’s an attempt to understand why people can possess the skills, knowledge, and motivation to succeed—and yet temporarily lose access to those abilities when processing costs exceed the nervous system’s available bandwidth.
That same question continues to shape everything I’m building today—from the Bandwidth Model, to the book I’m writing, to the BrightPath app, which is designed to help people identify their current state and match interventions to the bandwidth they actually have available.
Sometimes the most important ideas don’t begin with answers.
They begin with one simple question:
“Why isn’t this working?”
